Introduction to BJD_WTF
This journal is a collection of everything I can think of about BJDs. It will probably never be completely "done", but I intend to keep updating it as often as possible. It covers many topics related to BJDs, but I could never imagine every possible use for them, nor every related topic. I will do my best however, to cover as much as possible. I try to give the most current and useful information that I have access to. If you see something that I have missed, a link that doesn't work or info that is incorrect, feel free to comment here. I do this freely as a service to all BJD owners or want-to-be owners and their friends and family. Feel free to pass the link around or show your loved ones so they can understand your hobby; but *please* do not copy any photos or text because I have spent many hours compiling all of this information and taken time away from my hobby and my family to do so. As always, any photos I didn't take are clearly marked with their origin. If your photo is here without permission, comment here! Or if you would like to, feel free to donate some photos to the cause! Please do enjoy and I hope you learn something new!

:)

Please forgive me but, where did you find all of the information? I am curious to know where you learned about the BJD company's factory workings, as well as the history of the "ball jointed doll". It will probably be a good idea to post your sources on your profile page.

As far as the process by which dolls are made, I asked around to few people that made dolls (including Donn from Bishonen House, who looked over my "the making of" section). Of course, the process varies a little for each manufacturer, but this general outline covers the most basic steps.

Also, listing my sources would be very time consuming as I've picked up bits here and there. The info I've stated isn't gospel, but there isn't a lot out there so I've mostly pieced it together myself. Since I haven't used any direct quotes, I probably won't be making a "bibliography" so to speak. It's a big enough project just to get all the info in one place. ;)

If you see anything that is wrong or even a little off...please do comment. :)

I have a question..which way do you tie the knot in the elastic so you can undo it?

I have to cut my elastic everytime i want to do anything with it....

LOL!
I usually take the two ends together, loop them in a circle and pull the ends through. Then pull tight. A pencil or chopstick can be helpful in undoing this knot. I hope that helps! :)

Hi there... I have a tiny question here.

My girl her resin seems to get kinda shinning like glossy feeling. What can I do to get rid of this glossy thingy? Cause it seems whne I tried to put face up, the soft pastel seems won't stick much on it. i hope you can help me out.

By the way hope you don't mind I've added yea cause you really help me alot with all the infromation you wrote.

For shine, a coat or two of Mister Super Clear (or other *good* matte sealant) will fix it. This will also give your pastels something to grip when doing a faceup. It will also reduce the chance of staining the resin if you coat her first. Alternatively, you could use a superfine grade of sandpaper (always rub in circles) over her whole body, very lightly and that would take the shine off too. :) Hope that helps.

Please let me know if you have any more questions.

I wouldn't say that I am experienced. I just like dolls, and I read a lot about them. I try new stuff with my dolls sometimes too. I hope you (and any one else) will feel free to ask whatever you'd like to know. :) Hopefully I will be able to help!

Hello! I found the link for this in your signature on DoA ( I'm InkyBear, if you'd like to know! ^_^ )on a thread about dyeing your dolls. I'm just starting from the beginning so Might be commenting alot, hope you don't mind! :) It'll probably be a long time until I ever have the doll I want who I wish to dye, but I don't see anything wrong in learning about it early on. Although I am getting rather intimidated....O.o I'm so glad to see you do commissions as well!! It'll be something I'll think long and hard about. Thanks again for the awesome site!

Super Dollfies are about 22" instead of barbie's 11 inches. Think twice as big.

I stumbled onto this journal when I was searching for information on BJDs, and I would just like to say thank you for compiling this journal! I found everything I needed and more, and it was far more organized and informative than all of my Yahoo! searching on the subject. :) This is a wonderful site and I wanted you to know that your work was appreciated.

Hey there. Awesome data base of information. I have a few questions and they seem a bit silly to me, but you may know the answers.

1. What should you do if your doll faceplants and chips/cracks? Should you replace the head, or can you fill in the cracks and make her/him all better?

2. Can you dye the dolls wigs by hand? With a color that could wash out? Or is it all dependant on type of fur/saran/hair?

3. Are you a reader of Haute Doll, by any chance?

4. How long would a face up, company made and sealed proper, last? How often do you recommend faceupping?

5. Do doll sellers/traders usually trade a large doll, say a 62cm for a smaller one?

Sorry. I have alot of Questions. I hope to get "Kira" soon, and Id like to be prepared for him.

1. Often damage can be fixed by light sanding or the addition of apoxie. I recommend a professional customizer do this though.

2. Different materials take dye differently, but it can be done. Two things to keep in mind though; synthetics will likely reject dye and the dye will likely stain your dolls head. The better option would be to keep looking or have a custom wig made.

3. Yes, I am a loyal Haute Doll subscriber. ;)

4. Faceups can last years when treated properly, but life happens and sealant chips. I recommend changing faceups whenever you feel like it, or if the sealant chips. (This will be pretty obvious.)

5.Doll owners can sometimes trade larger dolls for smaller ones, but it doesn't happen often. Trades like this can depend on lots of factors, like how limited each doll is. For example, a Bambicrony Misty Rose Kumi (30cm) might be considered a fair trade for a Luts El (60cm). It can also depend on how much the other owner wants that particular doll. People sometimes do crazy trades to get the dolls they want. But for the most part; No, most people won't trade a big doll for a little one.

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like! :)

I do like Haute Doll, but I'd rather contribute as an editor than a writer. ;)

I think I have about 10 dolls right now and about 10 floating heads that still need bodies.

I'm so happy for you that you'll be getting your first doll. They are so amazing! I hope Kira makes you very happy and feel free to come back with questions at any time. :)

^_______^ This is my little boy, Kira. He was Picked up on May 24th and was dressed up on May 25th.
http://pics.livejournal.com/ryuaka/pic/00023he5

I have had him about a day and a half by now. I Still dont know what kind of Personaility he is going to have, but for now, hes so pretty. Hes strung really tightly though. And hes really heavy, or feels really heavy.

Quick Question: Kira's "Default" wig was a Long Silver wig, and it sheds like a cat in the heat of summer. Is there some way I can stop it from shedding all over the danged place? And can I root in more hair where its going off a bit? Ooh, what should I comb his hair with? Im afraid of having all of his hair come out. He really looks so pretty with his wig on.

I managed to even get him some Clothes too! He looks like he has the begining of a suit and a little t-shirt to put under it.

Im going to poke through the Clothing links you have, see if I cant get him a little something with a Hood.....

As far as I know, you can't "fix" shedding. I would recommend buying a very high quality wig. It will still shed, but not nearly as much; and it will last longer.

I don't know how to "root" more hair in, but I suppose any skilled wigmaker would be able to, if it were possible.

I suspect I read too much Haute Doll. People reroot Barbie and Ken heads with Needle and hair, I had assumed you could do that with Dolfie hair too.

Yes, I've also read about rerooting, but it's more commonly done with vinyl or plastic dolls, since they don't wear wigs. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :(

Hi!
I've "discovered" BJDs a couple of days ago and instantly fell in love. I fund this journal while looking for information about them and it's been very helpful, so thank you very much^^

Also, I have a rather strange question. You see the thing is that right now I have neither the money nor the space for a BJD but I was thinking... I'd like to do the faceup myself, and practice makes perfect right? If I made faces from clay and sprayed them with sealant, would the surface be similar to that of a doll? I mean would they be useful for faceup practice? Oh, and how do you deffine a "good" sealant?

I would recommend that you buy an obitsu head (available at junkyspot.com) or a dollfie dream head (available at volksusa.com). These heads are made of vinyl, but they are similar to resin bjd. You can use the same sealants, paints and pastels that you can use on resin. Vinyl heads are cheaper, also. Good Luck!

I am new to the dollfie community. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful information. I was wondering if you could possibly help me. A couple of years ago I bought a dollfie head. It is gorgeous and I now want a body. But I can't seem to find any information about it. It is marked Rcn "Little Fair". I do not know what company made her or what size body to get. The head is much bigger than a barbie head. Smaller than a tennis ball. Any information that you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Paige
